Argos GPS 500ml Tracked Plastic Water Bottle

HORIZON-DEV-ARTIC-R2

Welcome to open source ocean plastic pollution tracking.

Our ready-to-deploy satellite tracked 500ml plastic water bottle was designed to mimic a typical everyday plastic item for National Geographic's Sea to Source Plastics Expedition. As it matches the shape and size of a standard plastic water bottle, it's possible to replicate the flow of surface plastics in comparison to a large, heavy ocean drifting buoy or similar object that moves differently in the water due to size, weight and drag. All PCB schematics, firmware and enclosure CAD files are freely available via Github to modify and customise the bottle if required.

An Argos airtime account is required to transmit GPS locations to the Argos satellite network. Register an account to get started. Visual dashboarding is available free of charge to follow and track your bottles via the CLS dashboard interface.

About

On completion of the National Geographic Society’s Sea to Source Expedition, these bottles have been used to track ocean plastic pollution across the English Channel by the Zoological Society of London as part of their One Less campaign and were deployed at the 2022 UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon, revealing the route and destination of plastic waste from beaches in Lisbon, Portugal to the open ocean.

Inside each bottle is an embedded Arribada Horizon GPS logger, Argos ARTIC R2 transmitter and a 6.5A lithium primary cell battery pack. The Horizon board utilises an nRF52840 that wakes to aquire GPS at a pre-determined interval based on deployment length / battery life. GPS locations are logged and saved to memory with the last GPS position transmitted via Argos to passing satellites.

Plug-and-play out of the box

We’ve embedded our Arribada Horizon GPS together with our Argos ARTIC R2 transmitter inside a 500ml plastic water bottle. The bottle is compatible with next generation Kineis ARGOS-4 satellites and the future Kineis constellation of nanosatellites.

Developer friendly

Configure and modify the bottle’s settings using our straight forward Python tools over Bluetooth 5.0.

Integrate into your custom solution

Integrate your own I2C sensors, such as water temperature, Ph or a custom feature. As the electronics are encapsulated, let us know if you’d like to access the I2C pad during assembly.

What will you make?

Develop your own custom satellite-enabled GPS logger

Mount the kit’s hardware inside your own enclosure and benefit from the Horizon board’s low idle current (37uA) for projects that require long-term GPS logging with satellite backhaul.
